Account security is more important than ever. Here's how to protect yourself from hackers and data breaches.

1. Use a Password Manager

Stop reusing passwords. A password manager generates and stores unique, strong passwords for every account.

  • We recommend: Bitwarden (free), 1Password (paid)
  • Generate passwords 16+ characters with mixed characters

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

2FA adds a second layer of security beyond your password.

  • Best: Hardware keys (YubiKey) or authenticator apps
  • Good: SMS codes (better than nothing)
  • Enable on: Email, banking, social media first

3. Check for Breaches

Visit haveibeenpwned.com to see if your email has been in data breaches. Change passwords for any compromised accounts.

4. Review Connected Apps

Regularly audit apps connected to your Google, Facebook, and other accounts. Remove access for apps you no longer use.

5. Use Unique Emails for Important Accounts

Consider using email aliases or separate addresses for banking, shopping, and social media.
